When Sangeev Buwan left his home and family in northern Sri Lanka, was 24 years old. The aftermath of the civil war, economic problems, and only modest prospects for work with garment industry training forced him to travel from Jaffna to his relatives in Switzerland.
«I had to struggle a lot at first. There were language issues, visa issues, and I didn't dare to think about job prospects.»
This changed when Buwan learned German and was able to receive basic CNC training. With his newfound confidence, the young Sri Lankan was able to open new doors. He began working in factories.
Later, a friend informed Sangeev Buwan about the Refugees go Solar+ initiative. He already met the minimum requirements for the program due to his production-related work experience, oral level B1 German proficiency, and an in Switzerland-recognized education. After the introductory week, a few trial days and a three-month probationary period at a company which manufactures photovoltaic systems, Sangeev Buwan was given a permanent job as a Solar+ production assistant.
Working with solar plants is something I've never done before. It is a demanding job that allows me to exercise my brain. I have wonderful coworkers, regular working hours, a permanent job, and a good salary - everything I've ever wanted.»
When Sangeev Buwan is not traveling with his wife to neighboring countries, he likes to spend his spare time on his balcony, where he grows tomatoes, eggplants, and beans and maintains a small herb garden.
